our future is driven by our past

challenger spirit

Mazda and Hiroshima are inseparable. We are powerfully connected to our home city of Hiroshima. It embodies the history, the never-give-up spirit, the making-more-from-less that makes us who we are. We have grown up with this can-do attitude. Unsurprisingly, our challenger spirit can be traced back to Hiroshima’s past of always confronting the odds.

1967

birth of the rotary engine

In 1967, we finally managed to make the breakthrough and delivered what is now considered a classic, the iconic rotary-powered Cosmo sports car. The Cosmo opened a new chapter of automobile history and is considered a symbol of the Mazda Spirit of tirelessly overcoming challenges. When the president of Mazda, Tsuneji Matsuda, drove the prototype into the Tokyo Motor Show in 1963 it caused quite a stir. It was a car that clearly deserved the praise it received – “More like flying than driving.”

1989

debut of an iconic roadster

Mazda MX-5 Miata. In the 1980s, tough new regulations put carmakers off producing lightweight sports cars; they said the cars would be too heavy and slow. Mazda’s Kenichi Yamamoto and his team disagreed. They stopped at nothing to innovate to achieve Jinba Ittai, that feeling of oneness with the car and built a nimble roadster that’s pure joy to drive. There are more than a million Miatas on the road today.

1991

winner of le mans

Mazda 787B. The world witnessed Mazda’s spirit of determination when we won the 24 Hours of Le Mans and became the first Japanese car manufacturer to achieve it and the first in a car powered by a rotary engine. We tried in 1979 and every year from 1981 to 1991, winning on the 13th attempt.

2003

a new dawn for the rotary engine

Mazda RX-8. Mazda’s defiant engineers worked tirelessly to develop a lightweight, fuel-efficient rotary engine and introduced it in the four-door, four-seater iconic RX-8. In the same year, we rolled out the RX-8 Hydrogen RE, the world’s first practical rotary-engined car powered by hydrogen fuel.
